Trending Coffee Destination: Buffalo, NY

Before Local Coffee Talk was on my radar, I spent four years in Buffalo as a journalism undergrad—braving the lake-effect snow, cheering on the Bills (Go Bills! 🦬❤️💙), making lifelong friends and getting my first authentic taste of how community is built one cup at a time.

So, with more than a bit of college hometown pride, I get to spotlight Buffalo, NY, as this month's Trending Coffee Destination.

Subscribers to our First Sip newsletter got an early peek at Buffalo's blossoming coffee culture—and it's safe to say the Queen City is having a moment. What was once known mainly for wings and wild weather has quietly brewed up a deeply creative, community-first coffee scene rich with roasters, cafĂ©s, and local pride.

From bold blends in beautifully restored spaces to social-minded cafés with a mission, Buffalo's coffee shops are as diverse and warm as the people who run them. Whether you're wandering Elmwood Village, exploring the Old First Ward, or ducking into a café downtown, there's a buzz of something genuine happening—and we're here for it.

So whether you're a longtime Buffalonian, a curious traveler, or someone who believes great coffee starts with great people, this destination feature is for you. Grab your favorite mug, pour yourself something cozy, and explore a few of Buffalo's best brews below.

Overwinter Coffee
With locations in Elmwood Village and downtown, Overwinter Coffee is renowned for its single-origin beans sourced globally—from Guatemala to Uganda. Their inventive brews, like the "Hidden Trail" blend reminiscent of s'mores, offer a unique tasting experience.

Public Espresso + Coffee
Situated in the Hotel Lafayette, Public Espresso has been a staple since 2013. They roast their beans in-house and serve fresh donuts alongside made-to-order breakfast and lunch options, making it a go-to spot for locals and visitors.

Unapologetic Coffee
This Black-Women owned café on Main Street stands out with its vibrant atmosphere and commitment to community. Run by twin sisters Alicia and Alisa, Unapologetic Coffee offers a welcoming space and a menu as bold as its name suggests.

EM Tea Coffee Cup Café
Located on Buffalo's East Side, EM Tea Coffee Cup Café is more than just a coffee shop—it's a cultural hub. Hosting open mic poetry readings and community events, it provides a platform for local artists and a cozy spot for coffee aficionados.

Dog Ears Café & Bookstore
In South Buffalo, Dog Ears combines the love of reading with the love of coffee. This nonprofit bookstore and café offers house-made baked goods and a full breakfast and lunch menu, all while supporting literacy programs for local children.

Undergrounds Coffee House and Roastery
Housed in a former funeral home, Undergrounds in the Old First Ward embraces its unique setting with playful décor and a menu that pays homage to local history. It's a quirky yet cozy spot that's serious about its coffee and community.

Raha Coffee House
A newcomer to Buffalo's coffee scene, Raha Coffee House in Black Rock offers a cozy setting focusing on quality brews and community engagement.
